SELECTION PROCEDURES AND CRITERIA


The award provides a monetary stipend of $2,500.

Eligibility

The award is open to any employee, either faculty or staff member, making a significant contribution to general education at ASU. Furthermore, groups of individuals who work as a team in the creation, delivery or scholarly study of notable general education experiences are also eligible.

The award is based upon achievement during the preceding calendar year (January 1 - December 31). A winner (or winners) is not eligible to apply again for three years.


Selection Procedure
1. To be considered for the award, applicants must make a written application.

2. Applications and supporting documentation should be submitted to the Chair of the General Education Committee (GEC). Applicants who do not provide supporting documentation by the announced deadline will not be considered for awards. Application packets not by the announced deadline will not be considered for awards.

3. All materials to be considered in the evaluation process must be provided by the applicant in electronic format.

4. The GEC shall each year select 4 members to serve on an Awards Subcommittee. Subcommittee members will review materials and make recommendations to the GEC, which shall make the final determination of the award.

5. The selections at all levels should be based upon the criteria announced for the awards.

Criteria

Three areas of contributions to General Education will be considered. Applications may choose to focus on one or several of these areas in their application.
A. Teaching courses that are part of the General Education curriculum. Examples of documentation that would provide support for the application MAY include:

• Evaluations from General Education classes taught for the calendar year preceding the application. Evaluations should include numeric components and selected(or all?) student comments (note: the general Teaching Award asks for 12 student statements)
• A copy of the syllabus for the course
• Descriptions of innovative teaching methodology and/or course design
• Evidence of professional growth as a teacher/course designer through formal and/or informal professional development activities specific to the General Education curriculum.

B. Service to the General Education Program. For all activities, please describe the importance and merit of the service activities and append letters of special recognition and awards. Examples of documentation that would provide support for the application MAY include:
• Documentation of service activities at the department, college or university level.
• Documentation of service activities to professional organization or other outside entities that promote success in the General Education.

C. Scholarly research related to General Education. Applicants should submit a bibliography of scholarly work related to General Education published/presented during the calendar year preceding the application. Examples of documentation that would provide support for the application MAY include:

• The publication (or conditional acceptance) of one or more particularly high quality, original and scholarly contributions focused on General Education by a nationally recognized and refereed professional/academic journal, juried exhibition, or other professional outlets.
• Additional evidence of scholarly merit, including refereed scholarly activities such as presentations in regional journals or exhibits, or refereed papers read to professional organizations, related to General Education.
• Submitted grant proposals that focus on improving or assessing General Education even if they were not funded.
