A-State's Mascot Howl Qualifies for the UCA Collegiate Nationals
JONESBORO, Ark. – Arkansas State University’s mascot Howl was selected for the Universal Cheerleaders Association Collegiate Nationals in Orlando, Fla., in January 2015.
Howl ranked eighth in the UCA’s top-25 mascot video competition, earning him a spot in the 10-mascot championship at Walt Disney World.
"Our mascots are so excited to represent Arkansas State and the Sunbelt Conference at the 2015 UCA College Nationals,” A-State Spirit Squads Coordinator Paige Pauley said. “The fact that Howl placed 8th out of 25 mascots in Division 1 is such an honor.”
Howl tied for eighth with Wisconsin’s Bucky Badger, finishing ahead of the University of Alabama’s Big AL.
Highlight videos showing a mascot’s range of participation in game day, in-game, community service, athletic department special events and skits were judged to set the top 10 for the competition in Orlando.
The 2015 competition highlight video compiled by A-State’s Digital Creative Office is online at Arkansas State’s Facebook and Vimeo pages.
Last year, Howl entered the competition 10th and finished 9th overall after the competition.
“The students within the mascot program have worked tremendously hard to qualify and have started brainstorming for the skit that Howl will perform in Orlando,” Pauley said.
Arkansas State ranked just behind LSU, Tennessee and Oklahoma. Auburn University’s Aubie is seeded No. 1 followed by Washington State, Ohio State and Minnesota rounding out the top four.
Among the other mascots ranked in the top 25 were Kansas at 15th, Ole Miss at 16th, Mississippi State at 18th and Rutgers at 19th. One other Sun Belt Conference team made the top 25, as South Alabama was 13th.
The A-State Spirit Squads plan a dress rehearsal for the UCA Nationals at the Convocation Center on Jan. 14 at 6:30 p.m.
