Bradbury Presents 'Inspired' Exhibition of High School Works

11/27/2019

JONESBORO – “Inspired,” a high school art exhibition held annually in the Bradbury Art Museum at Arkansas State University, will open Tuesday, Dec. 3, at 5 p.m.

Now in its fifth year, this exhibition will feature work by 30 local area high school students.

Admission to the opening reception and exhibition, which continues through Friday, Dec.13, is free.  Bradbury Art Museum (BAM) is in Fowler Center, 201 Olympic Dr.

Each year, BAM offers local area high schools the opportunity to participate in Inspired, a competitive art exhibition held at Bradbury Art Museum (BAM).  Schools schedule a visit to BAM for an interactive tour of a current exhibition where students are encouraged to draw inspiration from the artwork seen during their visit.

Participants respond by creating a work of their own using the medium of their choice. Along with the artwork, each submission requires a written statement clarifying the concept of the work they created.

A juror then selects the artwork to be included in Inspired based on both written and visual submissions. Awards are offered and will be announced during the opening reception of the exhibition.  A listing of selected works is online.

The juror this year is local artist Dustyn Bork, who earned his Master of Fine Arts in printmaking from Indiana University and his Bachelor of Fine Arts in printmaking from the University of Michigan. In his work, he uses printmaking, painting and mixed media techniques to explore pattern, color and design.

Bork is an associate professor of art at Lyon College, where he has taught since 2010. In conjunction with Inspired, a few of his selected works will be shown in Kays Gallery in an exhibition titled “Supports.”

Last year all 10th through 12th grade students within a six-county area (Craighead, Greene, Jackson, Lawrence, Mississippi and Poinsett) were invited to participate. This year, freshmen were also offered the opportunity, and the reach was expanded to include schools in Clay, Cross, Independence, Randolph and Sharp counties.

Haley Voges, education coordinator for the museum, stated, “We continue to be amazed by the level of intellect and artistic skill represented within the students’ submissions. It’s an honor to directly witness the growth brought out by this experience.”

BAM hours are noon to 5 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday, noon to 7 p.m. on Thursday, noon to 5 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, 2 to 5 p.m. on Sunday, and by appointment. The museum is closed on Monday and when the university is not in session.
