Department of Music to present Concert Choir and Wind Ensemble in Chancellor’s Concert

02/20/2015

JONESBORO – The 2015 Chancellor's Concert represents the fourth collaboration of the Wind Ensemble and Concert Choir at Arkansas State University.

Although holiday and patriotic music is often written and performed by combined bands and choirs, not much repertoire of a more serious nature exists for accomplished wind and vocal groups.  Dr. Tim Oliver, director of bands, and Dr. Dale Miller, director of choral activities, have worked to bring together two of the most accomplished ensembles of the A-State Department of Music in this biennial series of concerts.

This concert will be Tuesday, Feb. 24, at 7:30 p.m. in Riceland Hall of Fowler Center, 201 Olympic Dr.  Admission is free.

Miller will conduct a 1993 composition by Eric Whitacre, one of the best-known living composers of choral and instrumental music. Miller stated, "The Concert Choir will be joined by the Wind Ensemble percussion section in 'Cloudburst,' which makes use of the singers and players in structured and random sequences.  The combination is captivating."

Sung in Spanish, the work includes vocal soloists from the choir, Drew Warren of Manila, senior vocal music education major, and Dennese Adkins of Cabot, senior vocal performance major, and the narrator is Frank Natera of Sanjuan, Puerto Rico, junior music major.

The A-State Wind Ensemble will continue the concert with a performance of “La Fiesta Mexicana” by H. Owen Reed. Considered to be one of his most significant wind works, “La Fiesta Mexicana” represents the events and experiences of a Mexican Fiesta. It is a landmark work full of excitement, drama, and musical delight.

Conducted by Dr. Oliver, "Lifesongs" by David Gillingham is written in three connected movements and features A-State's Concert Choir, Wind Ensemble, and soloists from the voice faculty.  Dr. Marika Kyriakos, professor of voice and chair of the Department of Music, is the soprano and Matt Carey, assistant professor of voice, is baritone soloist.
