Opera Theatre and Jonesboro Visual and Performing Arts School to present ‘Help! Help! The Globolinks!’

03/10/2014

JONESBORO  – The A-State Opera Theatre and select students from the Jonesboro Visual Performing Arts Magnet School will present “Help! Help! The Globolinks!” on Thursday and Friday, March 13-14, at 7:30 p.m. in Fowler Center Drama Theatre.

Last semester, just prior to Halloween, the Opera Theatre fall production previewed a theme for the year with “alien invasions” assisted by members of the audience, according to Dr. Marika Kyriakos, associate professor of music and director of Opera Theatre.  This semester they will continue the alien theme with the collaborative production of Menotti’s “Help, Help, the Globolinks!”

The ASU Opera Theatre will collaborate with students from the Visual and Performing Arts Magnet School under the direction of Elaine Bartee.  In short, the plot involves the alien invasion of St. Paul’s school, which presumably is an elementary/middle level educational institution.  The children have not returned from their spring vacation because the Globolinks have caused their bus to malfunction.

It turns out that only musical instruments can stop them.  Unfortunately, all but one student took their instrument with them on vacation.  Those who are touched by a Globolink lose their voices and eventually turn into Globolinks themselves.

As Menotti put it, this is an opera in one act for children and people who like children, Kyriakos added.  Though Globolinks are indeed sinister creatures, they are presented in somewhat of a humorous manner, thus the production is perfectly appropriate for all members of the family.

Members of the A-State Opera Theatre are Dennese Adkins of Cabot, Crystal Aronson of Paragould, Cori Beasley of Gilmer, Texas, Michelle Byrd of Pine Bluff, George Gatewood of Pine Bluff, Ben McClellan of Corning, Gregory Self of Highland, Kyle Smith of Forrest City, Baylee Stracener of Cabot, Ian Tucker of Bakersfield, Calif., and Inez Whitt of Pine Bluff.

Members of the cast from the Jonesboro Visual and Performing Arts School are Gillian Andis, Emily Bosche, Ava Dickson, Ella Heath, Makyla Hinton, Paige King, Connor Moore, Erica Parker, Keagan Pointer, Erin Riney, and Ben Sherman.

Tickets are available at the A-State Box Office or at the door.  Admission is $8.
