Spades Family to Endow Scholarship at A-State

10/20/2017

Arkansas State University announced today the creation of the Spades Family Endowed Scholarship, founded to help deserving pre-dental students finance and fulfill education priorities at Arkansas State.  The scholarship, which is the first created for a pre-dental student at A-State, was established following a commitment of $30,000 by the Spades family of Jonesboro to the Arkansas State University Foundation.  Drs. William and Joseph Spades, both A-State alumni, are dentists in Jonesboro.

“We are very grateful for everyone at Arkansas State University that helped us establish this scholarship,” said Dr. Joseph Spades. “When it’s all said and done, it’s not about a person’s belongings or their accomplishments.  It’s about helping others and giving back.”

Adding to that, Dr. William Spades commented, “This scholarship is another way that we, as a family, can give back to our community, our college, alma mater and our profession.”

Qualifications for receiving the scholarship, which is awarded annually, include being a full-time student who has completed at least 30 hours, a minimum 3.25 grade point average and a resident of Arkansas demonstrating a financial need.  Applicants will also submit a letter of recommendation and a brief biography.  Prior or current recipients of the scholarship will be eligible to reapply, but preference will be given to a student who has not yet been awarded the scholarship.

“We are delighted that our alumni, Drs. Joseph and William Spades, have honored the A-State College of Sciences and Mathematics with this endowed scholarship,” said Dr. Anne Grippo, interim dean of the College of Sciences and Mathematics.  “The financial support offered through the Spades family scholarship will be important to our talented pre-dental students who face financial challenges as they complete pre-professional degrees.”

Selection of the scholarship recipient will be made by the College of Sciences and Mathematics Scholarship Committee, the pre-professional adviser for pre-dental students and the Dean of the College of Sciences and Mathematics.
