My name is Erica Jennings. I work as the Student Success Specialist for International Student Services. My role in the Office of International Student Services, is to provide our students with the essential comprehensive support specific to international needs. The comprehensive support we offer students aims to support academic success and retention. We assist students from the areas of academic, cultural adjustment, emotional, and social support either in-office or by referring to other campus departments.
Although my focus is on first year students, and getting them acculturated through mentoring, and promoting connection on campus, I also meet with student that are identified in an academic risk. During individual l meetings, the student and I complete a plan of action assessment. Through the plan of action we are able to identify the area(s) that International Student Services can provide the best support for them.
These are just a few examples of questions we try to answer during a meeting.
- Where and how do I find a tutor for a hard class?
- Is there someone that can help translate so I can have a better understanding of a particular concept in class?
- How do I navigate MyCampus to look up classes for next semester?
- What does it mean to be on academic probation?
I encourage you to refer any students to me if you feel a student needs help with any of the following: Acclimating in class, missing classes, getting low test scores, continuous missed assignments, and having difficulty understanding assignments or lecture due to language etc.
In our office, besides the above mentioned, we have the following items that help us help students.
- International Ambassadors that represent their perspective student groups and are of use for translating help and providing support to those students
- Tutoring Lab in our building instructed by English as a Second Language instructors to help with English comprehension or offering software that develop English language skills
