The Global Studies Emphasis helps prepare you for a wide variety of employment opportunities, including in global cultural industries, environmental and health-related non-governmental organizations, human justice organizations, international service and development agencies, global media, travel and tourism industries, and national security. Combined with another major or minor, this emphasis, which includes interdisciplinary coursework related to international issues as well as development of skills in a world language, can make you ready for a career that will take you far. This degree includes a capstone project and a study abroad requirement; you will gain a first-hand immersion experience in the target language and culture at a location of your choice.

B.S.E. (Bachelor of Science in Education) in World Languages and Cultures with Emphasis in Spanish or French
The BSE in World Languages and Cultures shares much of the same French/Spanish core program content as the BA. The BSE in World Languages and Cultures thus prepares you for a wide variety of employment opportunities and graduate-level education as advanced level communication skills in French or Spanish, complemented with international experience and global competence, are of essence in every career field in the 21st century.
In addition, the BSE prepares you for a teaching profession in the secondary school setting; upon completing the degree and state licensing requirements, you will be licensed to teach and immediately employable as a teacher! The BSE degree includes a study abroad requirement and a target language internship (Spanish only) that will enable you to gain a first-hand immersion experience in the target language and culture at a location of your choice. Furthermore, the last semester of the BSE entails a full-time teaching internship in a secondary school to provide hands-on professional experience in teaching French or Spanish.

Certificate in Spanish for the Professions
The Certificate in Spanish for the Professions is designed for students who wish to further their communication skills and cultural knowledge to perform language services in professional settings where Spanish is used. It requires 12 hours, including SPAN 3723, Spanish for Professional Use; either SPAN 3483, Introduction to Translation and Interpretation or SPAN 3703, Spanish for International Business; and 6 other hours of advanced Spanish coursework.
Minors
French
A minor in French shows prospective employers that you have a working knowledge of French and familiarity with the Francophone culture.
French is a worldwide language, used across five continents, including Canada, our largest trading partner. As a language of business, tourism and diplomacy and science in Western Europe it is second to English only. French is the official language of NATO, the World Trade Organization, the European Union, the international Court of Justice, and the International Olympic Committee. The USA has more trade with countries using French than those using any other language and France and Québec are leaders in research and production in high tech fields such as computers, medicine, communications, and aeronautics. France and francophone (French-speaking) countries have some of the richest and most diverse cultures in the world.
All of the above make French an important language for any career field. The Minor in French entails 18 credit hours of intermediate and advanced level French language, culture and literature courses. Study abroad is a great option for the minor. Course options include both courses focused on language skills and those emphasizing awareness of French and Francophone literatures and cultures.
German
A minor in German shows prospective employers that you have a working knowledge of German and the Germanic culture. This enhances your employability, both in national and international companies as German has become a must-have language for careers in business, science, engineering, and many graduate programs.
Germany has the largest economy in the European Union and the third largest in the world. Germany is the EU’s industrial locomotive and by far its largest trading partner. German is the language most spoken in the European Union with about 110 million native speakers. It is the national language of Germany, Austria and large parts of Switzerland and a minority language in many other European countries. All of the above makes a minor in German a great complement to any major.
The Minor in German entails 18 credit hours of intermediate and advanced level German language, culture and literature courses. Study abroad is necessary for the minor.
Note: German courses are not offered in the 2022-2023 academic year.
International Studies
An International Studies Minor shows prospective employers and graduate schools that you have an interest in and knowledge of global affairs. The minor confirms that you can work in an interdisciplinary environment and are able to “put the pieces together” in our interconnected society. In addition, the International Studies Minor shows that you have skill in a second language, which is definitely a plus.
The Minor in International Studies entails 18 credit hours which include 6 credits of advanced coursework in a world language and 12 credits of Interdisciplinary electives. Study abroad is a great option for this minor.

Spanish
A minor in Spanish shows prospective employers that you have a working knowledge of Spanish and familiarity with Spanish and Latin American cultures. This enhances your employability as Hispanics are the fastest growing minority in the United States; Hispanics constitute a significant part of the cliental in many areas, including the medical fields, education, social services, business, science and engineering, among others. No matter where your future profession takes you, Spanish language communication skills will be a definite plus.
The Minor in Spanish entails 18 credit hours of intermediate and advanced level Spanish language, culture and literature courses. Study abroad is a great option for the minor; a professional internship in the target language environment is also available.
