McKay and Kim Receive Research Grants
Dr. Tanja McKay (left), professor of entomology and interim chair, biological sciences, was awarded a USDA-NIFA crop protections pest management grant. This multi-institutional grant, including Kansas State, Nebraska and USDA-ARS, Manhattan, Kan., aims to improve phosphine resistance management for insect pests in food facilities. A related USDA-NIFA grant was awarded to McKay and Dr. GwanSeon Kim (right), assistant professor of agricultural economics. They will work with colleagues from Kansas State, USDA-ARS, and rice mills to implement practical insect pest management systems for protecting bagged commodities in shipping containers. The grants total more than $700,000.

Barnhouse Examines Historic Hospital Issues
A monograph by Dr. Lucy Barnhouse, assistant professor of history, has been published by Amsterdam University Press. In Hospitals in Communities of the Late Medieval Rhineland: Houses of God, Places for the Sick, she argues both that hospitals’ legal status as religious institutions had to be defended to protect resources, and this status could be used to impose limits on who could be served. These issues have parallels in other periods of history and current debates.

Lee Makes Presentations in South Korea
Dr. Jaein Lee, assistant professor of sociology, presented an invited talk, “Christianity, Academic Network, and Studying Abroad in the United States,” to the Summer Colloquium of Korean Leadership Academy. He also presented a paper on religion and suicide acceptance to the Symposium of the Korea Inequality Research Network, and was a discussant for a session on economic sociology at the Korean Sociological Association meeting at Jeonbuk National University.

Hossain is Editor for Book on Data Analytics
Dr. Niamat Hossain, assistant professor of engineering management, edited a book titled Data Analytics for Supply Chain Networks, published by Springer. In addition to coordinating the publication process, he reviewed, edited and proofread chapter manuscripts to improve clarity and quality, and he worked with authors to ensure their manuscripts aligned with the publisher’s goals. In addition, Hossain wrote two chapters for the book.

Southerland Completes Ph.D. and Certification
Dr. Bryan Southerland, assistant professor of physical therapy, defended his dissertation, “An Exploration of Physical Therapy Dosage in Pediatrics Using Comparative Discontinuity Analysis,” at Central Arkansas. He was awarded a Ph.D. based on his biomechanics and rehabilitation research. Southerland also completed a year-long certification program in clinical anatomy instruction at Hardin-Simmons University. He joined other clinical anatomy instructors from across the nation for a collaborative capstone project.
