A-State Alumni Association Announces Scholarship Availability

11/01/2013

JONESBORO – Arkansas State University’s Alumni Association announced it is accepting applications for its License to HOWL Scholarship starting today.

“This year, four full-time students from each class (incoming freshmen, sophomore, junior and senior) will receive up to $5,000, $2,500 for the fall semester and another $2,500 for the spring semester, if the student continues to meet the scholarship criteria,” said Rich Carvell Jr., of Bentonville, Ark., association president. “Funding for these scholarships comes from the people of Arkansas–alumni and friends–who choose the A-State license plate available through the Arkansas Department of Finance and Administration.”

  • Carvell said to qualify for consideration, incoming freshmen must:
  • be a full-time student at the Jonesboro campus;
  • be a resident of the state of Arkansas;
  • have a minimum ACT score of 23 and a high school GPA of 3.5 and above;
  • submit completed applications by the December 1, 2013, deadline.

He noted selection will be based on demonstrated leadership qualities in high school, and special consideration will be given to those students who will be living on the A-State campus. To receive the scholarship again in the spring, recipients must continue their full-time status, be a student in good standing and have a collegiate GPA of 3.25. The deadline for incoming freshman applications is December 1, 2013.

  • To be considered for upperclassmen (sophomore, junior, senior) scholarships, applicants must:
  • be a full-time student on the Jonesboro campus;
  • be a resident of the state of Arkansas;
  • have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.25;
  • submit the completed application by the February 1, 2014, deadline.

Special consideration will be given to those students living on the Jonesboro campus who demonstrate leadership qualities or are actively involved in university-sponsored student activities or organizations, according to Beth Smith, executive director for alumni relations. Students must remain full-time and continue to meet the selection criteria to be eligible for the spring semester’s award.

“Only completed applications submitted by the appropriate deadlines will be considered for an award,” Smith noted. “The scholarship committee of the Alumni Association will review all completed applications and make selections.”

Persons interested in applying for these scholarships may access the application form from the Alumni Association’s website, www.astatealumni.org, and choose the ‘scholarships’ tab under the ‘ABOUT’ section. Smith said interested persons may obtain further information by calling 870.972.2586.

“We appreciate everyone who chooses to display the ‘official’ A-State plate because it benefits students through the License to HOWL Scholarships,” Carvell said.

The Arkansas General Assembly approved the issuance of official collegiate license plates for scholarships in 1993; $25 of the $35 collected yearly by the DFA to register these vehicles is earmarked for the program.
