A-State Biological Sciences Student Wins First-Place INBRE Award
JONESBORO – An undergraduate pre-professional biological sciences student at Arkansas State University was awarded a first-place honor at the recent IDeA Networks of Biomedical Research Excellence (INBRE) conference, held in Fayetteville.
Junior biology and chemistry major Salma Abdel-Karim of Jonesboro was awarded for her oral presentation focused on her research.
“I have had the privilege of researching both the anticancer and anti-inflammatory activities of the bioactive compounds from pigeon pea hairy root cultures, and I am very honored to have received this award,” said Abdel-Karim.
Dr. Fabricio Medina-Bolivar, professor of plant metabolic engineering, said this honor showcases the hard work and dedication that Abdel-Karim has put into her work.
“I want to extend my gratitude to A-State and INBRE for their invaluable support in providing opportunities for our students to excel and shine,” said Medina-Bolivar, who also is director of environmental sciences and molecular biosciences.
Abdel-Karim said she is grateful to everyone in the lab, including her research mentor Medina-Bolivar. She also said doctoral student Gaurav Gajurel, was instrumental to her success.
"I could not have done this without their continuous support and mentorship,” she added.
