A-State Museum Celebrates Black History Month with Feb. 25 Event

02/12/2025

JONESBORO – The public is invited to Arkansas State University Museum’s Black History Month celebration that includes a panel on Tuesday, Feb 25. A related new permanent exhibit will also be opened.

A-State Museum will welcome panelists Carolyn Sheppard, Erma Munns and Reginald (Ray) Prunty starting at 3 p.m. The Jonesboro natives will share stories and facilitate discussions about the Black business district of Jonesboro.

In America’s past, segregation laws separated races, making it vital for African Americans to serve their communities. Once Black businesses grew in numbers and accomplishments, entrepreneurial perseverance was encouraged, and their businesses flourished.

Today, many are unaware that this lively and thriving district existed.

Jill Kary, curator of education at A-State Museum, encourages the public to attend the free event. “Come prepared for lively discussion as local elders share their experiences,” she said.

Afterward, visitors are welcome to view A-State Museum’s newest exhibit, Historic Black Business Districts. The display will highlight local historic African American entrepreneurs and the impact they made on their communities. The gallery will be open from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. on Feb. 25.

“I love sharing stories of those who stood strong in the face of great adversity. We can all learn from their examples,” Kary added.
