A-State Once Again Awarded Carnegie Classification of 'R2'

12/17/2021

JONESBORO — Arkansas State University learned today that its status as a Doctoral University of High Research Activity was reaffirmed by the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education.

Commonly known as “R2,” Arkansas State’s status as one of the nation’s top research and teaching universities was elevated during the 2018 cycle of evaluation and classification by Carnegie. The new 2021 classifications were announced today as a part of Carnegie’s public review period.

“Obviously we are pleased to see our continued inclusion among the top research universities in America, and it is a compliment to the ongoing work performed by our faculty in the discovery of new knowledge that benefits everyone,” Chancellor Kelly Damphousse said. “Maintaining our R2 status continues to play an important role for our ability to recruit talent not only to Arkansas State in the classroom as students, faculty or researchers, but also to our hometown of Jonesboro and the Northeast Arkansas region.”

“I want to extend my profound thanks and congratulations to the members of our faculty and staff, whose hard work over the past three years have maintained our ranking,” Damphousse added.

Almost 4,000 American colleges and universities are a part of the classification. Nationally, only 270 universities qualify for the Doctoral University Very High (R1) or High (R2) Research Activity listings.

Arkansas State is among 133 universities in the R2 category according to Carnegie Classification, with notable institutions like Boise State, Brigham Young, Marquette, Louisiana Tech, SMU, TCU, Tulsa and Wake Forest. A-State is one of three national research universities listed for the state of Arkansas along with University of Arkansas at Fayetteville (R1) and the University of Arkansas at Little Rock (R2).

Among the current and future Sun Belt Conference peers, A-State is one of 10 institutions at either the R1 or R2 level including Georgia Southern, Georgia State, James Madison, Texas State, University of Louisiana-Lafayette, University of Southern Mississippi, University of South Alabama, University of Texas-Arlington and UALR.
