A-State Senior Meah Barbee Named a Gilman Scholar

05/17/2024

JONESBORO – Meah Barbee, an Arkansas State University senior marketing major from Memphis, has been awarded a Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship. She will participate in a marketing internship over the summer at the PAL K.K. Agency in Tokyo, Japan.

“I was shocked and grateful when I found out that I had received the Gilman Scholarship. I feel proud that my hard work paid off. I applied myself and kept a positive outlook even when I thought this opportunity might not work out financially,” said Barbee.

The Gilman Scholarship provides funding for students who would like to study abroad who otherwise may not have the opportunity. Gilman Scholars receive up to $5,000 to apply to their study-abroad or internship costs.

Barbee has served in AmeriCorps, mentored for transition studies and is a member of the Environmental Club.

Following her graduation in August, Barbee hopes to teach English in Japan and pursue a master’s degree in business.

“My advice to others is, don’t let where you come from stop you from where you’re going,” said Barbee.

This spring, the U.S. Department of State announced that more than 2,000 undergraduate students have received a Gilman grant. Students, including Barbee, will study or intern in over 90 countries and represent more than 500 colleges and universities in the United States.
