08/07/2013

JONESBORO – Area singers, college age and above, are invited to join the University/Community Choir at Arkansas State University during the fall and spring semesters, according to Dr. Dale Miller, director of choral activities.

The choir will present two local performances, Nov. 7 and March 17, and will participate in the choir’ s performance tour to Barcelona, Valencia, and Madrid, Spain in March.

The combined group will be under the direction of Dr. Miller for the Jonesboro and Spain performances.  The 2013-2014 repertoire will include a variety of music, concentrating on Spanish and American composers ranging from the 16th century to current day.  Performance attire will be tuxedos for men and long black dress (or black blouse and long black skirt) for women.

Auditions will be held by appointment beginning Monday, Aug. 12, in room 143 of the Fine Arts Center.  Rehearsals will be held weekly on Mondays beginning Aug. 26 from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Fine Arts Center Choir Room 144.  Interested singers should contact Dr. Miller at (870) 972-3841 no later than Aug. 26 to schedule an audition or to obtain for further details.

Students may register for the choir for credit (MUS 3361.004), or non-credit (3360.004) at current tuition.  The cost for non-students to participate in the University/Community Choir is $25 per semester, which covers the cost of sheet music and printing, through Continuing Education and Community Outreach.

Those who choose to participate in the optional trip to Spain will leave from Memphis on Thursday, March 20, and return on Saturday, March 29.  The tour cost is $3,549 per person, which includes two meals daily, double-occupancy hotel, airfare, ground transportation, admission to sightseeing venues, and concert management.  Family members also may participate in the trip at the same cost.

The choir opportunity is reflective of the university’s mission to educate leaders, enhance intellectual growth and enrich lives.
