Dr. Annette Hux Named Dean of Education and Behavioral Science

JONESBORO – Arkansas State University has named Dr. Annette Hux as dean of the College of Education and Behavioral Science (COEBS). Dr. Calvin White, executive vice chancellor and provost, made the announcement of the five-year appointment, effective July 1, pending ASU System Board of Trustees confirmation.

“In her interim term, Dr. Hux has proven herself an effective administrator and the right person to lead the College of Education and Behavioral Science for continued success,” said White.

Hux, who joined A-State's faculty in 2011, was appointed interim dean of the college last June, after the retirement of long-serving dean Dr. Mary Jane Bradley.

“This role is both an incredible opportunity and a significant responsibility,” said Hux. "It means taking on the mantle of leadership to shape the future of the college, guiding teaching excellence and research, while enhancing student and faculty success to make meaningful contributions to society. It offers me a chance to innovate, build connections, and foster a legacy of positive change."

“We are thrilled to welcome Dr. Hux to A-State’s Deans Council and are excited for the future of the college under her leadership. She is a demonstrated partner in effectively implementing campus priorities and initiatives,” said Chancellor Dr. Todd Shields.

White added that he is pleased with the accomplishments that have taken place in COEBS over the past year and after soliciting feedback from the college leadership team and community stakeholders the decision to appoint Hux became clear.

COEBS has achieved major milestones during Hux’s interim appointment, including substantial growth in enrollment in the college’s bachelor's degree programs. Significant advancements have taken place in the departments of Psychology and Counseling as well as Health, Physical Education and Sport Sciences, as the campus has placed an emphasis on mental and physical wellness.

Hux is also spearheading a review of curriculum effectiveness in graduate education programs and ensuring A-State is meeting the needs of education professionals in Arkansas and beyond.

Hux said her mission is to continue to actively and openly communicate with the COEBS community, attending meetings with all departments to ensure that faculty are heard and valued, and fostering an environment of collaboration. These accomplishments reflect a commitment to advancing education, promoting innovation, and supporting both students and faculty.

The future of the college is one of growth, innovation and community impact, which will be brought about by embracing technological advancements, fostering interdisciplinary collaboration, and focusing on inclusivity, mental health, wellness and sustainability.

“We want the college to be a place that not only adapts to the changing landscape of education and behavioral sciences but leads in shaping the national discourse. We will empower our students to be the next generation of educators, mental health and wellness professionals, and advocates, prepared to meet the challenges of the future with knowledge, compassion and resilience,” added Hux.

Before starting her career at A-State, Hux served in a myriad of roles for which current A-State students are preparing themselves, including special education teacher, principal and superintendent.

She received a bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Southwest Baptist University, master’s degree in elementary administration with certification in special education administration from Southeast Missouri State University, and a Doctor of Education degree in educational leadership in higher education from St. Louis University.

“We will continue to focus on innovative pedagogy, research and student and faculty excellence, while implementing cutting-edge approaches, such as the integration ofartificial intelligence in learning, and the intersection of mental and holistic health and wellness,” concluded Hux.
