Dr. Justin Castro Named Department of History Chair
JONESBORO – Dr. Justin Castro will serve as the chair for the Department of History at Arkansas State University this fall, Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Communication Dr. Carl Cates announced this week.
“I know the Department of History is pleased to engage such a productive scholar in its leadership,” Cates said.
An associate professor with A-State, Castro this past spring conducted an interactive simulcast presentations with Campus Queretaro called “Engineering Mexico.” Classrooms were linked for a discussion of his most recent book, Apostle of Progress: Modesto C. Rolland, Global Progressivism, and the Engineering of Revolutionary Mexico, with Jorge C. Rolland, a prominent engineer and Modesto Rolland's grandson.
A specialist in Mexico and Latin American history as well as the history of technology, Castro’s first book in 2016, Radio in Revolution: Wireless Technology and State Power in Mexico, 1897-1938, brought these two subject areas together.
A graduate of Northeastern State University in Tahlequah, Okla., Castro received his masters from Central Oklahoma and earned his doctorate in history at University of Oklahoma. He joined Arkansas State as an assistant professor in 2013, and was promoted to associate professor last year.
