Dr. Marques J. Ruff to Join A-State Music Faculty this Fall

06/18/2024

JONESBORO – The Department of Music at Arkansas State University will welcome a new faculty member this fall. Dr. Marques J. Ruff will serve as director of vocal music education and associate director of choral activities.

“This distinctive role presents me with the chance to collaborate closely with both pre-service music educators and aspiring professional musicians,” said Ruff.

Ruff will work with students beyond those on campus.

“His duties will include being an active clinician in secondary schools around the Mid-South, and a conductor and adjudicator at choral festivals around the country,” said Dr. Ryan Sullivan, director of choral activities and vocal studies coordinator.

“The prospect of engaging with the wider student community at A-State is truly exhilarating. My goal is to foster their intellectual curiosity, cultivate empathy towards humanity, and explore innovative avenues to contribute meaningfully to our global society,” added Ruff.

Ruff is an educator, bass-baritone and conductor. He has appeared with several orchestras and choruses as a soloist across the world. He is currently part of some of the nation’s finest choral ensembles, including the Santa Fe Desert Chorale, Exigence, and Conspirare.

Sullivan said Ruff’s work will continue to elevate the recognition of the music program at A-State across the U.S.

After receiving his bachelor’s degree in music education and performance from Central Connecticut State University, Ruff obtained two Master of Music degrees, one in choral conducting and the second in voice performance, from the University of Missouri. He received his doctoral degree in music education with an emphasis in choral conducting from Florida State University.
