Hispanic Heritage Month Celebration Begins with Kickoff Event Thursday in Union
JONESBORO – As the annual celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month 2022 gets underway this week at Arkansas State University, students are planning several activities continuing into October.
“Hispanic Heritage Month is one of my favorite times of year because it is a month dedicated for us to celebrate a variety of different Hispanic/LatinX cultures,” noted Jennifer Alicia Sustaita, president of Hermana y Hermano and Hermandad de Sigma Iota Alpha Incorporada. “I am so glad to be a part of a campus that recognizes and celebrates the students in these populations.”
Following the Hispanic Heritage Month workshop with Hermana y Hermano (H&H) at 6 p.m. Wednesday in the Reng Student Union auditorium, the kickoff event for the month-long celebration starts at 11 a.m. Thursday on the first floor of the union, sponsored by the Multicultural Center, Hermana y Hermano, and Hispanic Outreach and Latino/a/x Association (HOLA).
“We are excited to celebrate this month to celebrate all of our students within the Hispanic/LatinX community. This month is filled with a lot of collaborations across several student organizations as well as the Multicultural Center,” said Nora Bouzihay, assistant director of multicultural affairs. “We are looking forward to a month filled with fun and educational events for our students, faculty, staff, and community members.”
Events on the schedule are:
— “First, but Not Last!” starts at 6:30 p.m. Thursday in the Student Union auditorium, presented by Hermandad de Sigma Iota Alpha, Incorporada.
— “Después de la Playa” Baile, Latin dance party, with HOLA will be 6-10 p.m. Friday at the Collegiate Park Clubhouse (updated time and location).
— Café con Pan, with HOLA and the Multicultural Center, is set for 6-9 p.m. Monday, Sept. 19, in the Mockingbird Room of the Union.
— The Hispanic Heritage Month breakfast, hosted by the Multicultural Center, H&H and HOLA will be 9-11 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 21, in the Arkansas River Room of the Union.
— The Faculty and Community Mixer with Hermana y Hermano starts at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 27, in the Arkansas River Room of the Union.
— SIA, HOLA, H&H and Alpha Tau Omega will tailgate at The Pines, starting at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 8, before the Red Wolves football game.
— “In the Heights” movie night presented by the Multicultural Center and HOLA is 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 12, in the Multicultural Center, which is in the Union.
— ¡Adelante Mujeres! is the concluding event for the month-long celebration. During the 6-9 p.m. discussion Thursday, Oct. 13, topics will include the inequities that affect Latinas and Hispanas, and how students might overcome related difficulties. The session, hosted by HOLA and the Women’s Leadership Center, will be held in the Student Union auditorium.
