A-State Closing Early Today Due to Severe Weather Forecasts

The National Weather Service is forecasting a particularly dangerous severe weather event to move into the A-State campus area this afternoon, followed by historic rainfall amounts as we approach the weekend.  A-State will close today at 1 p.m. so that our students and employees can make arrangements to ride out the storms safely.

The Office of Emergency Management has created a Linktree (https://linktr.ee/AStateSevereWx) with valuable resources for severe weather.  It includes links to the A-State Alert sign-up form, weather news sources, and shelter locations on campus and throughout Craighead County.

Provost's Inclement Weather Policy
A-State reminds all students that if they believe it is unsafe to attend class, please consult the Provost’s Inclement Weather Policy as it relates to classes, especially for our commuter students.

Helpful reminders for severe weather at A-State:

  • Stay weather-aware. Make sure you have a weather app on your phone with the appropriate notifications enabled.  A-State also sends text alerts when the NWS issues a weather warning for the campus area.  Visit the my.AState portal to sign up for our emergency text message system.

  • Have a plan for shelter. The Reng Student Union is our designated storm shelter on campus.  If you are unable to get to the union, find an interior space, free from windows, on the bottom level of your building.

  • Avoid floodwaters. Remember, it is never safe to swim in floodwater due to hidden dangers and contamination. In addition, do not attempt to drive through floodwater.  If you see water finding its way into a campus building or other water issues, please report it to your RA, Building Liaison, or Facilities Management at (870) 972-2066.  For after-hours reports, call UPD at (870) 972-2093.

Kyle Fouts Becomes 'Arkansas Fellow' in State Program

06/04/2018

JONESBORO – With his bachelor's degree fresh in hand from Spring Commencement, Kyle Fouts starts work today as recipient of an Arkansas Fellowship.

His fellowship is with a University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences tech transfer start-up company, Angel Eye Cameras.  This is a two-year fellowship, with an annual salary of $40,000 and assurance of employment after he completes the experience.

"I have visited the office in Little Rock, met other employees, and have gotten to know the business better," Fouts said.  "A goal of the Arkansas Fellowship is to have Fellows experience many aspects of the company. My title will be business development, but I will be switching between multiple roles at the company. I will also have responsibilities and opportunities with the Arkansas Fellowship, such as being on one of the committees (events, marketing, recruitment or operations) and attending bi-annual retreats."

Fouts completed a Bachelor of Science degree in marketing management, with a minor in entrepreneurship.

"My adviser, Dr. Gail Hudson, does a great job notifying students of new opportunities, whether it be jobs, fellowships, internships or seminars," Fouts said.  Hudson, who is professor of marketing in the Neil Griffin College of Business, urged him to pursue the fellowship opportunity.

"Another person that has influenced me at A-State is Alan Copelin, an instructor of electrical engineering," Fouts continued.  "While I was studying in that college we would talk frequently.  He helped me decide that I really enjoyed business and entrepreneurship more than mechanical engineering."

A native of Beebe, Fouts attended Lighthouse Christian Academy before enrolling at A-State.

"So far I am very pleased and excited about the Fellowship. I have met entrepreneurs, was offered a great job at a great small company before I graduated, and I'm looking forward to the extra things the Fellowship offers like paying to attend a conference," the new Arkansas Fellow continued.  "I encourage other A-State students to apply for this if it sounds interesting to them. I also hope that there are professors in every college sending out info about new opportunities that may interest their students. Also, I would encourage for businesses in Northeast Arkansas to check out the website and think about becoming a mentor company."

The Arkansas Fellowship Program is designed for high-performance, high-potential undergraduates who are seeking entrepreneurial professional experience after graduation.
