Martin Luther King Jr. Day Events Occur on A-State Campus
JONESBORO – Arkansas State University and the greater northeast Arkansas community gathered today to celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
Following a motorcade from Lt. Col. Frederick Turner Jr. Military Science Building and a marching band performance, people moved inside the Fowler Center on the A-State campus to gear up for the program.
The theme for the 23rd annual celebration was "Mission Possible: Protecting Freedom, Justice & Democracy in the Spirit of Nonviolence."
During the program, the NEA MLK Dancers and Singers graced the stage and treated the audience to a performance.
Jonesboro native and Dallas resident Elder Jervonne D. Newsome served as the keynote speaker for the event. With a crowd standing on their feet, she encouraged attendees to “not bow” and continue to carry and live out Dr. King’s message.
“Dr. King's message of equality and nonviolence continues to deeply inspire all of us, and reminds us to never give up creating a more equitable society,” Shields said. “Let's make sure we remember the struggles and the ultimate sacrifice of Dr. King, those who came before us, those who continue to pursue the dream, and we recommit ourselves to the ongoing work of building a more equitable and inspiring future.”
