A-State Closing Early Today Due to Severe Weather Forecasts

The National Weather Service is forecasting a particularly dangerous severe weather event to move into the A-State campus area this afternoon, followed by historic rainfall amounts as we approach the weekend.  A-State will close today at 1 p.m. so that our students and employees can make arrangements to ride out the storms safely.

The Office of Emergency Management has created a Linktree (https://linktr.ee/AStateSevereWx) with valuable resources for severe weather.  It includes links to the A-State Alert sign-up form, weather news sources, and shelter locations on campus and throughout Craighead County.

Provost's Inclement Weather Policy
A-State reminds all students that if they believe it is unsafe to attend class, please consult the Provost’s Inclement Weather Policy as it relates to classes, especially for our commuter students.

Helpful reminders for severe weather at A-State:

  • Stay weather-aware. Make sure you have a weather app on your phone with the appropriate notifications enabled.  A-State also sends text alerts when the NWS issues a weather warning for the campus area.  Visit the my.AState portal to sign up for our emergency text message system.

  • Have a plan for shelter. The Reng Student Union is our designated storm shelter on campus.  If you are unable to get to the union, find an interior space, free from windows, on the bottom level of your building.

  • Avoid floodwaters. Remember, it is never safe to swim in floodwater due to hidden dangers and contamination. In addition, do not attempt to drive through floodwater.  If you see water finding its way into a campus building or other water issues, please report it to your RA, Building Liaison, or Facilities Management at (870) 972-2066.  For after-hours reports, call UPD at (870) 972-2093.

More Online Bachelor’s Degree Programs Now Available

04/27/2015

JONESBORO – Three fully online undergraduate degree programs, two new and one re-launched, join the Arkansas State University Online catalog, director of Global Initiatives Dr. Thilla Sivakumaran announced this week.

A bachelor’s degree in interdisciplinary studies and a new bachelor of general studies launch on May 18, along with a re-launch of the registered nurse to Bachelor of Science in nursing (RN to BSN).

“We continue to add new programs to our already robust online program at Arkansas State,” Sivakumaran said.  “Our goal is to provide a portal that is more responsive to our busy online students, both in our home state and also across the country.”

While RN to BSN is a convenient way for working professional nurses to upgrade their education, the interdisciplinary studies and general studies degrees are for anyone seeking to start or complete a four-year degree.

“These programs are designed to meet the needs of individuals who want to advance their careers, but lack the necessary credentials,” A-State Provost Lynita Cooksey said.  “The design of our programs allows us to offer high quality programs that assist the place-bound student or the full-time worker to move ahead with their educational goals.  For some students, the traditional form of on-campus classroom or the daytime class schedule just doesn’t fit into their lives.”

The Bachelor of General Studies (BGS) creates a program of study to gain knowledge from five concentration areas – health, physical education, technology, criminology and communication.  The Bachelor of Science in interdisciplinary studies takes advantage of existing course work, and focuses on innovation and integration as students design their own majors.

“Each program has different strengths, and we are encouraging students interested in completing a bachelor’s degree online to contact us at AState.edu/Online to learn more about which program best suits their needs,” Sivakumaran said.

The three undergraduate programs join 21 fully online degree programs already in the Arkansas State catalog.  The university recently re-launched the home page for its online programs with new tools to allow potential students to decide on areas of study.

“These new degrees and our new webpage are the next stage of A-State Online,” Cooksey said.  “We anticipate additional degree programs joining our offerings later this year.”

One of the oldest and largest online degree programs in the state of Arkansas, A-State Online degrees earned national rankings over the past several years, including best value in the U.S. for Master of Public Administration and four consecutive years of top 15 ranking from US News and World Report for online MBA programs.
