Red Wolves Rumble: A-State Debate Tournament Planned for This Weekend

02/11/2025

JONESBORO – Arkansas State University will welcome high school debate teams from across the state to campus this weekend for a tournament. The tournament will be held in the Humanities and Social Sciences Building, with check-in available in the lobby.

Students will compete in various events designed to challenge their research and public speaking abilities.

The event will take place from 4 until 10 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 14, and from 8 a.m. until 3 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 15, offering an opportunity for high school debaters to showcase their skills in front of a supportive audience.

Participants will compete in challenging events that can strengthen their skills in critical thinking, research, and persuasive speaking. This tournament is for debaters of all experience levels.

Coach Abigail Mock said, “The tournament is an exciting competition and an opportunity for A-State’s Debate Team to recruit future talent. We hope to inspire high school students to consider A-State as their college home, providing them with an inside look at the university’s thriving debate program, supported by enthusiastic faculty and students alike.”

All debate events during the tournament are open to the public, providing a chance for the community to witness the next generation of debaters in action. Friends, family, and anyone interested in the art of debate are encouraged to attend.

“By hosting this tournament, we aim to showcase what A-State has to offer to high school debaters who may one day join our collegiate debate team,” said Rocco Hicks, debate team member.

This event also serves as preparation for A-State’s plans to host collegiate debate tournaments in the future.

“Our goal is to raise awareness about the available opportunities and to demonstrate the strong support our debate team receives from the university community,” said debate team member Rainey Page.

A-State is also seeking students and community members to volunteer as judges for the tournament. Judges are key to the tournament’s success, providing feedback and ensuring smooth operations.
