Summer Commencement Set For August 4

JONESBORO – A record 1,096 students will receive degrees at Arkansas State University’s 2017 summer graduation ceremony, Friday, Aug. 4. The event begins at 7 p.m. in the Convocation Center, 217 Olympic Drive, in Jonesboro.

The 1,096 students exceed the previous record of 952 in 2016. Of the 2017 summer class, 40 candidates are graduating with honors, including 21 cum laude, 16 magna cum laude and three summa cum laude. Eight of those are graduating with university honors from the Honors College.

Dr. Lynita Cooksey, provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs, will confer degrees upon students from the Colleges of Agriculture, Engineering and Technology; Business; Education and Behavioral Science; Liberal Arts and Communication; Nursing and Health Professions; and Sciences and Mathematics. 

Taylor Maggio of Maryville, Ill., who is receiving a Bachelor of Science degree in dietetics, will address the gathering on behalf of the graduating class. She is graduating summa cum laude and has been on the Chancellor’s List each semester since enrolling in A-State.

Dr. Evelyn Taylor, assistant professor of social work, will deliver remarks on behalf of the A-State faculty.

Following the commencement ceremony, there is a reception for all graduates and families at the north mezzanine with punch and cookies.
