Prospective Students
Students of all backgrounds and majors will enjoy participating in the many musical opportunities at A-State while taking advantage of one of the best music scholarship programs in the region. All students involved in musical ensembles in the Department of Music will find a friendly and inclusive culture of excellence in performance. Alongside our high standard of performance, those intending to pursue a degree in music will study closely in the classroom with a highly acclaimed faculty of performers, composers, pedagogues, researchers, and scholars, all of whom are committed to providing an earnest education to the diverse students at A-State.

Scholarships
In addition to the academic scholarships available at A-State, the Department of Music also offers scholarships for interested students of all types and majors. To be considered for music scholarships, students must first apply and audition for the appropriate area of study (Band, Choral, Strings, etc.) and then participate in the required ensembles. Privately funded music scholarships may also be awarded to eligible students but must be applied for separately. Regardless of major, all students MUST audition to be considered for music scholarships. For more information about requirements and eligibility, please read below.

Audition Info
Regardless of major, all students must fill out the “Music Audition and Scholarship Form” and audition for the A-State Music Department to be admitted into the program as well as considered for a music scholarship. Auditions are held on designated audition days but may also be scheduled individually as needed. Please note that priority consideration is given to those who audition prior to April 1st. Audition repertoire and requirements may differ per instrument or area but generally consist of a combination of etudes, scales, and sight-reading.

Undergraduate Degrees
The A-State Department of Music offers multiple undergraduate degree tracks in the field of music and is an accredited institutional member of the National Association of Schools of Music. Students who major in music pursue degrees for professional careers in the field of performance, education, or other associated music fields and many continue on to more advanced musical studies at the graduate level.
- Bachelor of Music Education (BME): Students who successfully complete this degree are certified to teach music in grades K-12 in the state of Arkansas.
- Bachelor of Music (BM): This degree emphasizes music composition or performance (instrumental, keyboard, voice), depending on concentration area.

- Minor in Music: A minor in music is designed to support students interest in music and jazz studies - theoretically, all music courses, ensembles, and individual lessons can be used to satisfy the music minor.

Graduate Degrees
The A-State graduate degrees in music are designed to provide advanced instruction and training at the professional level for those pursuing musical careers or continuing on to pursue doctorate degrees. Masters degrees may be pursued in Music Education as well as a number of concentrations of Music Performance. Graduate Assistantships are available and are awarded based on application and merit. The A-State Department of Music entrance examinations in music history, music theory, and ear training assist in planning each student’s exact course of study.
- Master of Music (MM): For students interested in pursuing specialized instruction towards developing a performance career. This degree culminates in a graduate recital. Areas of emphasis include: Instrumental Performance, Composition, Conducting [Choral or Instrumental], Collaborative Piano, and Piano Performance and Pedagogy, Piano Performance, and Voice Performance.
- Master of Music Education (MME): This degree is designed for advanced study for public educators who already have their initial certification. Classes are scheduled to allow degree completion either as a full-time or part-time student.

Apply to A-State
Students must be accepted into both the university and the Department of Music in order to major in music or be awarded music scholarships at A-State. Acceptance into the Music Department is contingent on audition. Students must fill out the Music Department Application Form to begin the process of scheduling an audition and being accepted into the Music Department.
