Bachelor of Science in Agriculture

Majors

Agricultural Business

Graduates from our program are trained to work in the ever changing world economy and acquire enhanced marketability for a wide range of careers. Our curriculum provides a common body of knowledge for students in Agricultural Economics and Business Administration while combining core courses from Agricultural and Applied Economics with business courses in Accounting, Marketing, Management, Finance, and Business Law to provide a strong foundation for careers in management of agricultural businesses.

Agricultural Studies

Graduates choosing an emphasis in Agricultural Education will have the knowledge and skills for creating and delivering agricultural content, designing hands-on learning experiences, and advising agricultural youth organizations. Career opportunities include becoming a high school ag teacher, county extension agent, ag literacy specialist, agricultural trainers, and so much more. Also, for the first time ever, we will offer an online paths for our students: Ag Studies (formerly an emphasis in Ag Science). Whether you want to educate the next generation of agriculturists, lead the technological revolution in agriculture, or work while you complete your degree online, Agricultural Studies has an option for you.

Animal Science

Animal Science involves study of the science and business of producing domestic livestock, such as beef and dairy cattle, swine, poultry, sheep and goats. An animal scientist applies principles of the biological, physical, and social sciences to the problems associated with livestock production, management, and welfare. Animal Science is also concerned with human food (meat, milk, eggs, etc.) produced from domesticated livestock species. In addition, Animal Science includes aspects of companion animals (horses, dogs, cats, etc.), including their nutrition, care, and welfare.

GIS & Precision Agriculture

Formerly Agricultural Systems Technology, students choosing this major can complete requirements either in-person or online. It prepares students to use spatial data and geospatial technologies to solve problems in agriculture and other human-environment interactions. The GIS components of our program give students the ability to use spatial data to make decisions, make maps, and perform spatial analysis. The remote sensing curriculum exposes students to both space-based satellite imagery and airborne imagery. This includes images acquired from both airplanes and unmanned aircraft systems. Most of our students acquire the FAA part 107 sUAS Remote Pilot Certificate, allowing them to fly sUAS commercially.

The precision agriculture components of our program emphasize data driven agronomic decision making. Emphasis is placed on the use of tools and techniques for efficient irrigation. Furthermore, students learn to analyze agronomic sites to determine if nutrient, pesticide, or seeding rate variability is appropriate and how to generate prescriptions and read as-applied maps for satellite guided equipment.

As a culmination of the degree, students will utilize the skills and background knowledge they have acquired to create a solution to an agricultural or related human-environment problem.

Plant and Soil Science

The Plant and Soil Science area has a tradition of research and education in crop production, horticulture, soil management and precision agriculture technologies. We have an outstanding faculty who are developing management strategies for crop production, environmental protections, horticultural production, landscape management and maintenance, as well as preparing the future generation of land managers and agricultural professionals.
