Pre-Veterinary
College: Beck College of Science and Mathematics
Department: Biological SciencesDescription
The Biological Sciences program with an emphasis in Pre-Veterinary meets the requirements of nearly all veterinary schools affiliated with the Association of American Veterinary Medical Colleges, including the proposed A-State College of Veterinary Medicine.
Traditional science background coursework in Mathematics, Chemistry, and Physics are included, in addition to essential upper-level courses such as Genetics, Microbiology, Comparative Anatomy, and Animal Physiology. In addition to meeting veterinary-school prerequisites, the electives (disease, suborganismal, and organismal) allow each student to tailor their degree to their interests and provide a strong foundation for successful completion of a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) program. For example, in addition to traditional veterinary practice with large and companion animals, opportunities to take elective wildlife courses will appeal to those interested in becoming a Wildlife DVM. Ultimately, the electives are designed to strengthen student understanding in the areas of animal disease, organ-level anatomy/physiology, and organismal biology. The opportunities for internships are available within this program.
