Dr. Philip Tew

Place of birth?
Natchez, Miss.
Why did you choose A-State?
The future co-workers I met on my campus visit – three extremely nice people (Dr. Jim Washam, Dr. David Kern, and Professor Patricia Robertson) and one marketing guy who was way tooooooooo excitable and thrilled about A-State – Dr. Shane Hunt.
What makes a good professor?
Someone who listens to students and attempts to show them viewpoints that they may not have encountered in their past.
What is your favorite podcast?
Selected Shorts, Public Radio International
Who was your favorite teacher (and why)?
In high school it was Mrs. Nelda New and in law school it was Professor Robert Khayat – both for the same reasons: they were friendly, the seemed to care about the student’s success, and they had a good sense of humor.
What makes for a good student?
An open-mind – someone who is willing and wants to learn.
What’s the value of a university education?
There is not one. My discipline is about valuing things (stocks, businesses, real estate, etc.) and there is really no way to put a finite value on a university education – it is more than increased earnings capacity over a life expectancy.
What does e3 mean to you?
Education enriches lives – everything else is great, but an A-State education enriches the students’ lives.
Your philosophy on education in seven words:
To Succeed At Anything You Need Education.
What music is playing in your car?
None – ESPN Radio or Yahoo! Sports Radio.
What are you working on right now?
Two Research Papers ("Financial Literacy and the First Year Student" and "Twitter and the Stock Market: Using Social Media to Teach Market Efficiency") and one textbook (iBook) – Personal Finance for Students.
