Welcome to Arkansas State University!

What’s your name?

Jennifer Diane Ulloa

Place of birth?

Arkansas

Any siblings?

I have two older sisters - Karen and Irely

What’s your major?

I am double majoring in English and Spanish, and minoring in International Studies

What’s your favorite part about learning a foreign language?

I enjoy being able to order food, ask for directions, and use the slang of a foreign language. Those are the most useful skills to me. I've got friends teaching me Arabic right now.

What’s your favorite word in Spanish?

Berenjena. Eggplant or aubergine. I tried being vegan once. My friend and I would order berejena for every meal while in Spain. I hate eating eggplant now, but that little memory has stuck with me.

Have you studied abroad? Where? What did you like the most about the experience?

I have studied and worked in the south of Spain. I enjoyed feeling like I belonged there - establishing a daily routine, going to the grocery store and knowing everyone's name, going for a round of tapas during the evening..

What are you going to do when you graduate?

I have a job where I translate spanish for Hispanic truck drivers, but other than that I hope to continue doing what I love doing most, traveling. I'll start graduate school in the fall.

Where do you see yourself in five years?

I couldn't even tell you where I see myself tomorrow!

What language would you like to learn next?

Arabic!

Cats or dogs?

Cats, although I am dying for a chow.

Beach or mountain?

Beach, but I really prefer the city.

What music is playing in your car?

It is always a tossup - but right now, Say Lou Lou.

What advice would you give to a student who’s starting college now?

Open yourself to new ideas. Really listen to others.

If I could travel anywhere, I’d go to…

Egypt.

What’s the last book you’ve read?

Blink by Malcolm Gladwell. Its about the science behind snap judgments and first impressions. He cites a lot of psychology experiments back to back, but it still flows with the rest of his narrating technique. Gladwell used to write for the New Yorker, he's really easy to digest.

Two people you’d take to coffee

My parents. It would be like a Latin soap opera.

What’s your favorite movie?

Dirty Dancing is so good and I love the music.. and Patrick Swayze.. I mean, come on.
